Grapefruit

What do you love now, that you hated when you were younger?

“Try this,” my mother said, pushing a bowl of sliced fruit in front of me, “it’s good for you.”

Is it? Nine year old me stared at the grapefruit sliced in half on my plate. The absolute nerve of her, dusting it with powdered sugar. The first bite ticked me off…

It tasted like citrus and earwax. She stared at me from the other side of the kitchen, glaring in her mom like way.

I finished it, and felt like my life ended. I couldn’t get the taste out of my mouth for what seemed to be years!

I know, so dramatic!

Fast forward to June of 2026, someone kindly dropped off much needed food. I was awaiting payment from different streams of income, and it was delayed. So the help was appreciated. I eyed the grapefruit for a while…

Then I said – I need fruit anyway. Grabbing my pink paring knife, I sliced the ripe fruit half way, then added powdered sugar…

And fell immensely in love.

Had I truly been neglecting this citrus heaven all of my days from one bad experience? Am I just hungry?

No. I enjoyed it. I went back to finish the other grapefruit left, thoroughly enjoying that experience as well.

My mother would be tickled by watching me consume said earwax fruit.

I’m glad I gave it another try.

Except – I’m also not so keen to stock ten of them in my home. I’m just glad I’ve changed a little.
