There are some touchy topics I’m going to cover here, but they are all truths.
I long abandoned the “read for read” group antics of other writers because I was out of place. I’ve had many writers, especially white women, confront me for no reason other than fear. While I am prolific, imagine 20 year old me joining the publishers group chat to be attacked by an older white woman because my novel was selling better than hers!
The major reason I am self published is because…despite white people suggesting they are not racist or that they support black women, in particular…
I am often met with rage, jealousy, or cast aside. While their books are spotlighted, sold and talked about. When you’re a person of color, you have to work twice as hard for less.
I’ve read popular series…one after the other. Poorly written. Baseless topics, fueled by unrealistic imaginary men and scenarios.
But I’ve also tasted the sweetest of victories, and I know how well I write.
Stop suggesting you support black women writers, when you’re only saying so to look a certain way. No one – absolutely no one, helped me with 🥀The Fray🥀 . No one edited, proof read, ran ads, collected data, came up with ideas, or illustrated my work.
Not a single soul. Just me (which is great – no one can take credit!)
And here it is, thriving. I’m no where close to being finished. But I am going to let everyone know –
Support isn’t silently agreeing in my inbox or when we talk on the phone. Support is buying books, spreading the word and actually feeling proud. Support is understanding, until ignorance is silenced…racism still exists in all sectors. Black women will be the underdog until we get our heads out of our asses.
