I Would Do it Again

Daily writing prompt
Name the most expensive personal item you’ve ever purchased (not your home or car).

The way I was raised, was to obtain material items by buying outright, and never leasing or renting. I am a firm believer in that, to this day. It grew into buying leather shoes and handbags, precious metals…and fur/crystals (specifically Swarovski Crystals).

I spent over $4000 in fur and accessories one year. And it wasn’t even a jacket!

About $500 worth was stolen by a fellow who took me on a date. He attempted to compensate me…two years later. And when I asked where my fur was, he didn’t have a good answer. My group of friends and I imagine he is still sniffing it to this day!

I grew up around sophistication, so my plans were to keep the fur as long as possible. Actually, when I purchase luxury items, I take care of my purchases. I currently own two pair of fox fur slides, and have no intent of throwing them out or giving them away anytime soon. I’m not a fan of faux fur or leather…because it’s meant to be purchased and replaced. The materials used for these products are actually extremely harmful for consumers and the planet.

I’d also like to add, that I do not purchase popular high end items (Louis Vuitton, Valentino) and prefer mom and pop leather and fur shops. Swarovski is an exception because their jewelry actually lasts, and I love their watches. I have a celestial, navy blue watch by them (that needs the battery replaced…).. The watch band is leather, and I’ve had it for four years, going on five. I purchased their Tarot set that year as well…symbolic charms (evil eyes, crescent moons, the sun) as three pair of earrings, a ring, the watch, a bracelet and a necklace. I also purchased a pen that day.

I still own everything mentioned!

I do not often make huge purchases, otherwise I wouldn’t have any money! That cost me nearly $3k! But it’s lasted, and I am very happy. I often replace the ink cartridge for the pen I bought.

I’ve slowed down in my big spending, because the idea of buying things that last worked! So I don’t feel the need to buy anything major at the moment.

  1. It sounds as if you value your expensive items. I rarely spend much on anything because possessions don’t mean much to me.

    1. True – but I value things that will last. I don’t like shopping all the time. I also hate replacing something, knowing it’s going to rot in a landfill.

It’s posted in other prompts, but I’ve gotten as far as making my own clothing to avoid shopping and waste.

So I’ve certainly gone entirely without anything at all, and managed to be happy about it. If I’m going to buy anything, I want it to last.

  2. I understand, and I wasn’t making a statement about you but only of me. All the best to you.
