For those of you who have studied art, you had required research as well. As apart of the actual curriculum, I studied Art History, I would say at least six years out of my earlier school days.
Typically, most subjects started with the type of art (Modern, Classical Art, Surrealism) and from then on, you end up picking an artist you’d love to study on.
While some artists were just out of this world with their standards, methods and skills, I often chose surrealism over realism and impressionist artists because the messages were clearly seen. Yes, Rembrandt and Michelangelo were excellent at their craft, two artists always stuck out to me.
Salvador Dali’s art haunted me, in a good way. I could spend hours looking at his pieces, I felt like I always caught something new every single time. “The Persistence of Memory” helped fuel one of my best selling novels (2018), Erin Bailey is a Time Lord.
I learned aside from my studies, that time wasn’t necessarily a solid construct, and was put into place for control purposes. His art definitely allowed me to idle on that for the longest time.
While obscure, disturbing and definitely not the “Birth of Venus”, it still set the stage for what my mind wanted to wander over.
Next on my list is Frida Kahlo. She didn’t consider her art Surreal, but it most certainly is. She depicted a lot of pain during a time where people still wanted classics, and valued perfectionism when it came to art. As an artist, creating what others feel is besides the point of creation. You are to capture yourself…almost frozen in time at that moment. No matter which emotions you are displaying.
She also always honestly depicted her looks. I have never been so enamored by someone’s self portraits in my life – to render yourself as such in each moment, no matter what. I felt it was extraordinary and despite how she felt during her life…extremely confident. Here is one of my favorite self portraits by the artist click here
Art isn’t always about how perfect something can be. It is a depiction of emotions, and movement which evolves through the creation process. I will not judge anyone’s choices, but art is most certainly for everyone.
