To Give

Write about a random act of kindness you’ve done for someone.

In 2017, I was on ankle monitor for having defended myself against my ex – my offense was greater.

My mother supplied me with funds, simply to make sure I wouldn’t be homeless. She didn’t know I had slept in my car at the time.

I decided to go shopping since I had extra money, and ran into a beautiful older woman from Chicago at Torrid. She commented how beautiful I was, but it was when she noticed my ankle monitor and we started talking, she began to cry.

“I’m sorry he hurt you. Promise me you won’t go back to him.”

As it turns out, she had an ex abuse her as well. He shot her in the head, and thinking she was dead…buried her in their backyard. She was found by family a few days later.

Unfortunately, she underwent a lot of surgery. Maggots had infested her wound and she was in a coma for nearly four months. After a handful of surgeries, she came to. Then after a while, she moved to Denver, where we both reside.

I was shocked at her story, because there she was, standing in front of me – still breathing and caring about others around her. So I paid for her entire purchase at Torrid. I also gave the backpack off my back to the cashier, who said she wished she could afford it.

I don’t think on this often, but kindness is easy for me. Someone told me the truth about the situation I was in, and if it wasn’t for her kindness…I probably would have gone back, making a fool out of myself again.

Nothing is ever an accident.
