🥀The Fray – The Music, and Inspiration 🥀

cover by JCS

Usually, there is one song that fuels my novellas. But this time, I required an entire playlist. It ranges from Classical to Metal, with great bits in between. The Fray is a 100k word novel, perhaps that’s why I needed more inspiration!

However, what’s more impactful are the relationship songs. Like make up sex, or realizing someone is crazy. Both the protagonists and antagonists have their own music that always bring them to mind when heard.

For Miguel and Nia Cervantez, it is Elégie in C Minor, Op.24 performed by Sheku Kennah-Mason, and then Worship by Ari Abdul. Elégie is so well loved, it’s mentioned in earlier parts of the novel. It is masterfully performed, and has become a favorite of mine, period.

Worship makes all the more sense, especially if you understand the absolute necessity of Miguel’s protection and want for Nia. It is sweet, but in a devouring and obsessive type of sense. Be it that Nia is to be worshipped, and Miguel can’t help it.

I wanted to broaden what the book would be about, and introduced Mateo Cervantez. He is a difficult werewolf, in comparison to his brother. He idles, dangerously with his emotions towards Isabella Montage, who was briefly featured on my website last November. Isabella, to put it lightly, is labeled as insane during this time period piece (late 1800s), which to Mateo is perfect. Girls on the Internet, another song by Ari Abdul, helped bring their tumultuous fling to flame. Contortionist by Araknai sheds a sadder, more truthful light on things.

Then there’s Monica Ramos. I featured Monica’s Blight last year for Halloween, and Deeper has mention of our young antihero. For her, I chose String Quartet No. 8 K, 168 II Asante, a score by Mozart but performed by Nostitz Quartet. It fits perfectly with the beauty and disarray Monica Ramos is wrapped in.

Near the end of the novel, I relied on Enemy by Father of Peace. It was the perfect tune for what Mateo was feeling, as his world was unraveling around him, once again.

And with that, I cultivated a great playlist, featured on Spotify!

Music is very important in my everyday life, and being able to use different songs as inspiration helped set the stage for this Dark Fantasy novel.
